Following a three-month comprehensive planning process, Penn State officials have determined that the University can meet or exceed the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s guidelines for colleges and universities, and look forward to welcoming back faculty, staff and students to resume on-campus, in-person classes and other activities this fall in a limited fashion.
Following a very active year as Penn State Scranton’s Student Government Association president, Emily Scarfo is on to her next big role — student senator.
Penn State Scranton Associate Professor of Biology Renée E. Bishop-Pierce was recently elected to the Senate’s Faculty Advisory Committee to the president. Her term will continue through the spring semester of 2022.
Penn State Scranton IST professor Alan Peslak has received the International Association for Computer Information Systems’ 2020 Ben Bauman Award for Excellence. Meanwhile, he was reappointed to serve as University College IST discipline coordinator for the 2020-21 academic year.
When Penn State switched to remote delivery of its courses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Penn State Scranton faculty had to rapidly transition how they would teach their classes for the remainder of the spring semester. Thanks to a helping hand from the IT department, who provided training and technology assistance, and a positive attitude, they were able to meet the challenge.
Emily Glodzik, financial assistant in Penn State Scranton's Finance Office has been named the campus' June Employee of the Month by Chancellor Marwan Wafa.
Brianna Lowry, a registered nurse in Pennsylvania, decided to help another state in need and now works in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in New York City. "This pandemic is challenging as a nurse in every way possible," she said, but shares a message of hope for her colleagues. "I know this is the most difficult thing we’ve seen, but keep going. You are making a difference."
The Penn State Scranton campus community had reason to celebrate earlier this spring despite all of the challenges and changes the COVID-19 pandemic has caused when Assistant Director of Student Services and Engagement Matt Nied and his family welcomed their newest addition, Colby Robert Nied.
This past semester, corporate communication students got an opportunity to film and edit a video of a Family Business Alliance event, “If These Walls Could Talk,” a presentation by members of the Dempsey family, owners of the local companies Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply and DxDempsey.
Kim Stout-Kramer, a 2020 graduate of Penn State's Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) program, was recently recognized by the Honors Student Recognition Program of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR).
