Penn State students will have the opportunity to learn more about the Thanksgiving holiday and similar holidays around the world by attending the Penn State Northeast Regional Thanksgiving Dinner.
Thanks to a second grant from Global Program’s Penn State-University of Split collaboration, Renee Bishop-Pierce, associate professor of biology, will deliver the course Coastal Biology – Biol 482 in collaboration with the University of Split, allowing qualified Penn State Scranton students the opportunity to study in Croatia this summer.
Real journalists discussed ‘fake news’ at a special panel discussion hosted by Penn State Scranton and the Scranton Reads program on Wednesday afternoon. “The War of the Worlds” the Orson Welles radio drama based on the novel of the same name, which caused widespread panic and chaos in 1938 when listeners, including some in Scranton, thought an alien invasion was really happening, served as the impetus for the discussion. Kelley Wagers, associate professor of English at Penn State Scranton organized the panel discussion, which featured professional journalists weighing in on the current fake news phenomenon and offering tips on how to be a better news consumer.
Penn State alumna Ann Vaida has established the Richard K. and Marianne Byron Open Doors Scholarship in honor of her nephew, Richard, and his wife, Marianne.
Since graduating with her bachelor of arts in English from Penn State Scranton, Tara Marta has gone on to earn a master of arts in creative writing from Wilkes University and has been published 12 times. Recently, she had an essay featured in the anthology “I Am Strength,” a book that became a No. 1 new release in feminist theory on Amazon.com.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the campus’ Community Club, an outgrowth of the Human Development and Family Studies degree program at the campus, hosted a domestic violence awareness program. Judy Copeland, a licensed clinical social worker at the Women’s Resource Center of Scranton, and Joanne Smith, a domestic abusive survivor, shared their stories, resources and information.
The Scranton LaunchBox, a community entrepreneurial initiative undertaken by Penn State Scranton, was officially opened on Tuesday, Oct. 2, with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Penn State President Eric Barron, other Penn State administrators, as well as regional economic development and public officials.
