Campus purse bingo event will raise money for THON

What better way to start off 2022 than supporting a good cause while also having a chance to win a designer handbag?

On Sunday, Feb. 6, Penn State Scranton is hosting a Designer Purse Bingo from 3 to 6:30 p.m. in the campus’ Multi-Purpose Building (gym). The event benefits THON and is open to the public. Organizers are encouraging the campus’ staff, students and the community to come out for the event and bring their friends and family along as well.

Penn State’s THON organization is committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer with a mission to provide emotional and financial support, spread awareness, and ensure funding for critical research — all in pursuit of a cure. It is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world and has raised more than $190 million for over 4,800 families affected by pediatric cancer since its inception in 1973. All told, more than 16,500 student volunteers have taken part in the event.

Each year, thousands of Penn State students across the Commonwealth, including students from Penn State Scranton, participate in the event, which includes months of fundraising that culminate in a 46-hour dance marathon at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park.

This year, THON’s theme for 2022 is “Spark Endless Light.” All of THON’s proceeds go directly to support for pediatric cancer patients and cancer research at Penn State’s Hershey Medical Center and the Four Diamonds Fund.

For those interested in attending the cost is $25 per person and includes 16 games and one door prize chance. Seats are limited to 250 attendees, and this event fills up fast, so purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. Also, attendees must follow Penn State masking requirements, which requires all visitors on campus to wear face masks covering the nose and mouth inside of campus facilities.
