Dual Credit

Start your college career now! Earn college credit while you’re still in high school.

Penn State Scranton offers dual credit courses to qualifying high school juniors and seniors in school districts located in Northeastern Pennsylvania. High School students earn college credit, that can be applied to most majors at Penn State University or other colleges and universities. Penn State will give all dual credit students a 50% tuition reduction on up to 8 credits.

Approved dual credit classes are typically general education courses taught by faculty who have been approved to teach high school students.

Dual Credit Eligibility

Students who have completed their junior year or are currently in their senior year of high school are eligible for dual credit. Exceptions are considered for high school juniors and underclassmen on a case-by-case basis.

Dual Credit students may take up to 8 credits per semester. Most students take one or two courses per 16-week semester in addition to, or in place of, high school coursework.

Dual Credit Eligibility and Qualifications:

  1. Your high school must have a signed Dual Credit Agreement with Penn State Scranton.
  2. The student is a high school junior or senior and is making satisfactory progress toward fulfilling applicable secondary school graduation requirements, as determined by the school district.

  3. The school district will determine satisfactory progress based on credit earned.
  4. The student demonstrates readiness for college-level coursework in the intended subject area of study, as determined by Penn State Scranton. The University will determine readiness based on placement exam decisions.
  5.  In order to remain in the program, a minimum grade of 2.0 must be earned in each dual credit course in which the student is enrolled.

Dual Credit Grades and Courses

Students are eligible to register for Dual Credit courses in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. The students will not be allowed to enroll in more than 24 post-secondary credits through Dual Credit per academic year.

Students must earn a minimum grade of 2.0 in order to successfully complete a course.

Cost of Dual Credit

High School students take college courses at a 50% tuition reduction. Students may be responsible for partial tuition, books, and other fees associated with specific courses.

All cost of attendance elements can be viewed at: University Budget Office’s Tuition and Fees schedules, after selecting the location.
