As the first person in her family to attend college in the United States, and an immigrant, Penn State Scranton alumna Janvi Patel is highly motivated by her parents and their struggles due to cultural differences. Her desire to help others through the same difficulties, especially those who face language barriers, inspired her to become an ESL teacher at United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania — something she says she will continue to do as she pursues her master's degree.
Recent alumna Janvi Patel, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology this December, found a passion while being a peer-tutor at Penn State Scranton’s Learning and Writing Center last semester when she got the opportunity to help educate others through an English as a Second Language teaching position for United Neighborhood Centers in Scranton.
Recently, nursing faculty and students honored the memory of Mary Runco, the department's long-time staff assistant who died unexpectedly last month, by serving food and refreshments to individuals at the Community Intervention Center in Scranton, and donating personal and hygiene items for those in need.
