Penn State Scranton alumnus and U.S. veteran E.J. Long committed $20,000 for a Veterans’ Lounge in the campus' Study Learning Center. The lounge is a quiet, private space for those students who are veterans now working on their college degrees and needing a quiet, private space to study or take a break from their classes and the daily grind, where they can relax and decompress.
Penn State Scranton has been recognized by the Pennsylvania National Guard Associations for its continuing efforts to better serve the needs of its veteran and active-duty military student population.
Penn State Scranton was recently among 13 Pennsylvania colleges and universities named a Pennsylvania National Guard Associations Guard-Friendly School. PNGAS is the only advocacy group dedicated to the needs of the state’s National Guard members and veterans.
On Thursday, Nov. 14, Ken Hickman, director of the Penn State All-Sports Museum at University Park, came to Penn State Scranton to deliver two engaging and informative lectures about the exhibit, which is on display in the campus library through Dec. 13.
Penn State Scranton increased its outreach to the local military community when it hosted its first Veterans Employment and Education Conference on Nov. 7. The all-day event featured “Green Zone” training for local employers, as well as career counseling workshops for area veterans and active-duty military personnel.
Just in time for Veterans Day, Penn State Scranton will play host to a traveling exhibit that pays homage to University athletes who bravely served their country during World War I.
On Thursday, Nov. 7, Penn State Scranton will host its first Veterans Employment & Education Conference, which will be centered around career education, leadership development and translating military experience to civilian life for veterans and active-duty military personnel. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on campus, with optional one-on-one career counseling services available to veterans from 2 to 5 p.m.
On Wednesday, Penn State Scranton held an Open House for its refurbished Veterans Lounge, located in the lower level of the campus library. The event was was attended by veteran students, faculty and staff.
