HDFS Careers

Our Students Get Jobs!!

Our HDFS program, developed with input and advice from community and human services leaders throughout the state, prepares individuals to work as human services professionals in their communities. Students must have completed at least 60 college credit hours prior to enrolling in the program. 

The program combines the theory of human development across the life span with applied study in a community setting while developing written and oral communication skills as well as computer skills. Students participate in:

  • active learning
  • team building
  • group exercises

Our program allows students throughout the state to become familiar with unique human services needs and organizations in Pennsylvania communities; a model that sets this program apart from other human services degrees offered throughout the state.

Typical employment settings include:

  • Preschools
  • Daycare centers
  • Hospital programs for children, youth, and families,
  • Institutional and community mental health programs for individuals and families
  • Programs for abused or neglected children and adolescents
  • Women's resource centers
  • Human resources programs
  • Employee assistance programs
  • Nursing homes
  • Area agencies on aging and other community settings for older adults
  • Public welfare and family service agencies
  • School guidance counselors
  • Drug and alcohol counseling

Typical postgraduate pursuits of students completing this option include:

  • Social work
  • Graduate study in human development
  • Family studies
  • Psychology, or sociology, or advanced professional training in psychology
  • Law
  • Behavioral health
