Snowflake Dance is fun way to help raise money for THON

Winter at Penn State Scranton always means plenty of fun-filled events and activities for students aimed at helping to beat the winter blues -- whether it’s bingo, arts and crafts, holiday parties or fundraisers benefiting a variety of different causes.

This semester, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) is doing its part to add to the fun with its second annual Snowflake Dance, a semi-formal style event complete with dinner and entertainment.

This year’s Snowflake Dance will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in The View Café. It will have a wintry feel, and is open to both students and nonstudents.

Event goers will enjoy a buffet dinner that will also include a dessert bar, and entertainment will be provided by EJ the DJ. There will also be a photo booth featuring fun costumes and props.

All proceeds will benefit Penn State’s IFC-Panhellenic Dance Marathon, a 46-hour, “no sitting, no sleeping” event at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center at University Park that benefits Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey. Since 1973, THON, the largest student-run philanthropic organization in the world, has raised more than $168 million for families with children affected by pediatric cancer.

CAB President Tabitha Boyd and campus Coordinator of Student Activities Julie Gilpatrick are hoping that this year’s attendance surpasses last year’s event. “We are hoping for 100 people to attend,” Boyd said, which would raise over $2,000 for THON. Last year, about 70 people attended the dance and $1,700 was raised for THON.

Boyd says her favorite thing about organizing events like this is that “it really gives me the chance to get people involved on campus and the opportunity to meet new people.” Her biggest priority when it comes to planning big events like this is to “just keep organized.”

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Student Activities office in the Study Learning Center, Room 119.
