DUNMORE, Pa. — Penn State Scranton is highlighting the campus' student marshals who will lead their fellow graduates during the 57th commencement ceremony procession on May 10 at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple. In this series, we will feature students selected as marshals for their academic programs. Join us as we explore their academic journeys, insights and advice for future students.

Student Marshal: Zachary William Hensel

Major: Multidisciplinary Studies, A.A. with a science concentration

Q: What are your post-grad plans?

Hensel: My post-graduation plan is to attend Johnson College in the fall and get my veterinary technician license.

Q: What was your favorite memory at Penn State Scranton?

Hensel: My favorite memory is attending a video game tournament my first semester here. Everybody was so nice and welcoming; the food was delicious and it made me feel much more comfortable being a new college student knowing there were people that just wanted to chill out and have a good time.

Q: What was your favorite learning experience?

Hensel: My favorite learning experience was in Assistant Teaching Professor of Arts and Humanities Jim Hart's public speaking class. That class greatly increased my ability to speak to people, which is a skill that I needed to improve and now I have much less issues talking and presenting in front of people.

Q: What experience prepared you the most for what is next?

Hensel: The experience that has helped me most for what's next in my life is the workload of college. It made me learn how to plan out my week and create a schedule on what assignments and projects to do first. It has overall made my life much more organized since that's what you need to do in order to succeed.

Q: Who at Penn State Scranton has supported you and how?

Hensel: My adviser, Assistant Teaching Professor of English Paul Perrone, has greatly supported me in determining my time here at Penn State and my future ambitions. He made my time here run so much smoother and granted me opportunities that I never would have gotten otherwise. I was lost arriving here my first semester and Perrone steered me in the direction that I was trying to go but couldn't figure out properly.

Q: Do you have any advice for incoming students beginning their Penn State journey?

Hensel: My advice for an incoming student to Penn State is to enjoy their time here and take advantage of every opportunity this campus has to offer. Whether it's The Writing Center, the Library or study rooms, use all of the helpful resources this campus has to their fullest because it will make your time here much easier. Be sure to enjoy the other facets like the numerous amounts of clubs and activities this campus offers constantly. I joined the gaming and bowling clubs, and they were some of the best times I've had here at Penn State. With the events, each one is unique and entertaining that could even lead to new friendships and connections.
