Nimrod Chapo, '23 - Student Testimonial

Student: Nimrod Chapo, '23
Major: Biology, with a focus in Pre-Med

What are your impressions of the campus?
“In general, I really like Penn State Scranton. I like being on a small campus, and I like being able to talk to my professors after class. Also, I’ve made a lot of friends here. Overall, I think I made the right choice.”

What courses have you particularly enjoyed taking?
“My English class, which is an honors class -- I really enjoy it. Honestly, it’s the first English class I’ve actually enjoyed. Coming from high school, I never really enjoyed English. This was the first one where I felt like I learned something. I like that it’s a little more high level, a little more challenging. You get out of it what you put into it.”

How has your time been at Penn State Scranton?
“It’s been great. If you ever have a question, you can always just ask the professor and get your answer. You know there’s going to be no confusion. … The Honors Program here is great – Dr. (Meg) Hatch, my adviser, has been wonderful in helping me through the Schreyer Honors College application. … I’m going to miss the small-campus environment when I go down to U Park. I definitely made the right choice coming here.”

Kaléi Kowalchik - Student testimonial

Student: Kaléi Kowalchik, '20
Major: Nursing; minor in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)

Why Penn State Scranton?
“One of the reasons I chose Penn State Scranton was the ability to get a four-year degree with the Penn State name. That’s something that really brings you forward in the nursing field. Penn State nurses are known. … Also, I was accepted into the Honors Program. The one here is very flexible and has a high caliber of rigor. It just worked for me.”

What role did tuition play in your decision to come here?
“Being at a smaller satellite college, it’s not as expensive as the larger universities --  and I get to stay at home. That saved a lot of money as well. So, there were just a lot of benefits, and I would have been silly to choose somewhere else. Going back, I would choose it 100 times over again.”

How important have the nursing faculty been in terms of influencing your future plans?
“The faculty are phenomenal. They know what your end goals and dreams are, and they see that and they take you under their wing and they guide you. They see that I want to be an educator and they let me see some of the stuff behind the scenes. What their day-to-day life is like as an educator. And I appreciate that. … I love Penn State so much I chose it again – I'm enrolling in the Ph.D. nursing program at University Park. My goal is to get my Ph.D. and then come back and teach at Penn State Scranton.”
