Nursing Simulation Laboratory

Students prepare for clinical situations.

The Nursing Simulation Laboratory at Penn State Scranton includes life like patient mannequins that let students experience real-world medical situations—like treating common illnesses and responding to emergencies—just like nurses do in hospitals. These hands-on clinical experiences help students build important nursing skills, learn how to work as a team, communicate with other healthcare professionals, think critically, and make smart decisions in low-risk, realistic environment.

Watch as students gain real-world experience.

Simulated Learning on Mannequins

These high-tech mannequins are designed to act like real patients—they can simulate breathing sounds, heartbeats, heart murmurs, dilated pupils and even reactions to treatments. You’ll get to observe everything from childbirth to elderly care, giving you a hands-on look at every stage of patient care while providing lifelike responses to medical intervention.

The clinical opportunities in our simulated specialty units include:

  • Pediatric lab
  • Maternity/Newborn lab
  • Community Health/Psych lab
  • Health assessment/Skills lab
  • Medical Surgical/Geriatric lab
  • Medical Surgical lab

Healthcare technology

Students utilize of some of the most current technology in the healthcare setting including:

  • IV pumps
  • Tube feeding pumps
  • Medication carts
  • Unit-specific crash carts
  • Defibrillators

Recorded observations for playback and critique.

The nursing simulation lab also has control rooms that are adjacent to most specialty units. These rooms are for observation and recording of clinical simulations, which are used for reflection and debriefing of students' interactions during the simulations.
