Career Opportunities for Mechanical Engineers

Mechanical engineering graduates go on to work in a diverse range of industries for large multinational companies and small local firms.

Mechanical engineers also are well prepared to work as managers due to their broad backgrounds and creative problem-solving skills. 

Engineering Job Outlook

According to US Bureau of Labor and Statistics employment of mechanical engineers is projected to grow 11% from 2023 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations.

About 19,800 openings for mechanical engineers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

Mechanical Engineer Pay

According to US BLS the median annual wage for mechanical engineers was $99,510 in May 2023.  

Licensed Profession

Many US states and territories require professional licensure or certification to be employed. 

Professional Engineer Exams 

Pennsylvania requires that every engineer, with or without a college degree, must pass the Professional Engineer Examination in order to become registered as a professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Center for Business Development and Community Outreach at Penn State Scranton offers engineering exam review programs designed to prepare students for these exams.
