Penn State Alumni Fellow Lisa Miles returns to campus to speak to students

Lisa Miles '91 was one of 19 Alumni Fellows named this year by the Penn State Alumni Association for her outstanding professional accomplishments. The lifelong title is the highest award given by the Association.

Ms. Miles, who began her college career at Penn State Worthington Scranton, is senior vice president of investor relations and corporate communications at MAXIMUS, Inc., a global company with more than 16,000 employees worldwide, including a facility in the Scranton area.

In 2012, MAXIMUS established a regional hub in Moosic to help deliver program services in support of its Medicare Part A appeals work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Under this program, MAXIMUS completes independent reviews for disputed claims and provider appeals for all 50 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa. The local location provides specialized services through a team of local staff that includes nurses, doctors, physical therapists, health appeals specialists and other professional health clinicians.

As a member of MAXIMUS' senior leadership team, Ms. Miles serves as the head of communications, where she has been instrumental in creating and directing a world-class communications team that handles a wide range of initiatives across multiple business lines, including traditional and online media, crisis communications, public relations, marketing communications, employee communications and investor relations.

With nearly 20 years of experience, Ms. Miles has been recognized by several industry groups for excellence in her field.

While a student at Worthington Scranton, Lisa served as a student leader and Lion Ambassador.  She is also a PSWS scholarship donor, having established the Gammaitoni-Barnes Trustee Scholarship, for PSWS undergraduate students who have a demonstrated financial need, with first preference given to students enrolled in the Human Development and Family Studies program.

Lisa and her husband, Paul Barnes, live in Sterling, Virginia, with their son, Jack.
