Worthington Scranton's Community Service Club has been one of the campus' most active, sponsoring a variety of fundraising and awareness programs each year that benefit local charities and individuals who may need help. Past initiatives have included volunteering at the annual Feed-A-Friend Thanksgiving food drive at the Scranton Cultural Center; Locks of Love, which benefitted children undergoing cancer treatment; sponsoring domestic violence awareness programs on campus; and organizing a fundraiser for the victims of last year's earthquake in Haiti - just to name a few.
Now, they have taken on a fundraiser aimed at helping some four-legged friends in need.
Earlier this month, club members launched a collection on campus to raise both money and needed pet items such as food, treats, cat litter etc. for animals at the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, which had been in the news recently for experiencing detrimental cuts in funding that would severely impact its ability to take in and care for homeless animals.
Students placed donation bins on campus, held sales of homemade dog biscuits, and also accepted monetary donations.
With the fundraiser now in its final week, student organizers have raised a total of $446; 134 pounds of dog food; 152 pounds of cat food; and 95 pounds of kitty litter.
With the effort nearing its completion - all donations will be delivered by students to the shelter on Thursday, March 31 - club members are putting out a last call for help from our campus community.
They are hoping to end their effort with at least $500 in monetary donations, and at least 200 pounds each of cat and dog food and kitty litter. Anyone interested in helping out, can simply drop off items in any of the collection bins on campus - there is one large one outside the SGA office in the Study Learning Center, or contact Heather Konrad directly at [email protected] or by calling 570-854-6644.
The shelter really can use all the help it can get, so anything anyone can do to help us, help them, will be greatly appreciated, said Ms. Konrad.
