The Penn State Worthington Scranton Alumni Society has broken from its annual tradition and chosen to honor not one, but two special alumni this year.
George and Lisa Akulonis, campus and University alumni, are being honored as the society's Alumni of the Year during a special celebration at the campus on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The couple have been active members of the campus alumni society for more than 20 years and volunteered countless hours at alumni events such as the society's annual Breakfast with the Nittany Lion, the annual Alumni Society/James D. Gallagher Golf Tournament, and other community outreach activities hosted by the alumni society throughout the year.
Lisa, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in business management, is a branch manager for Citizen's Savings Bank in Clarks Summit, and George, who received a bachelor's degree in horticulture, is president and owner of Pro Gro Landscape Specialists Inc. Both are active members of the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church; Lisa serves on the church's administrative council and audit committees, and George serving on the finance committee and board of trustees.
"We are truly fortunate to have two people so dedicated and involved with our society," said Kathy Zelinski, Penn State Worthington Scranton Alumni Society president. "George and Lisa have been very active with our group and the Worthington Scranton campus for a very long time, and have always been there to lend a helping hand whenever needed. We are very proud to have them as our Alumni of the Year."
