Penn State Scranton will host its annual Designer Purse Bingo to benefit THON on Sunday, Feb. 5. Doors open at 1 p.m. and games start at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 and advance purchase is highly recommended, as seating is limited and this event normally draws a large crowd.

As the first person in her family to attend college in the United States, and an immigrant, Penn State Scranton alumna Janvi Patel is highly motivated by her parents and their struggles due to cultural differences. Her desire to help others through the same difficulties, especially those who face language barriers, inspired her to become an ESL teacher at United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania — something she says she will continue to do as she pursues her master's degree.

Recently, nursing faculty and students honored the memory of Mary Runco, the department's long-time staff assistant who died unexpectedly last month, by serving food and refreshments to individuals at the Community Intervention Center in Scranton, and donating personal and hygiene items for those in need.
