When did Penn State Worthington become Penn State Scranton?
The transition to Penn State Scranton marked an exciting milestone in our campus's history. Approved by Penn State's Board of Trustees in July 2017 and made official on May 1, 2018, the name change strengthened the connection to the region, increased public recognition, and reflected its growing role as a destination for academic excellence.
New name, the same strong Penn State tradition.
Although the campus name changed from Penn State Worthington Scranton to Penn State Scranton, its connection to the Scranton family and the enduring legacy of Worthington Scranton remain an important part of campus history. A prominent reminder of that heritage stands on the campus patio, where a large vintage-style pedestal clock near the Nittany Lion Shrine was dedicated in honor of Worthington Scranton, a well-respected industrialist and philanthropist in the Scranton region and the campus's original namesake. The new name strengthens the campus's identity within the Greater Scranton region while continuing to celebrate the people whose support helped advance higher education in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Growing into a four-year university in Northeast PA.
The name change was designed to better reflect the region the campus serves and its evolution into a comprehensive, four-year university. What many people once knew as a two-year campus has grown into a full-service Penn State campus, offering students the opportunity to earn bachelor's degrees close to home while benefiting from the resources and reputation of one of the nation's leading public universities.
Today, Penn State Scranton offers a variety of four-year degree programs and provides students with the opportunity to begin the first two years of more than 275 Penn State majors before completing their degrees at another Penn State campus through the University's unique 2+2 Plan, which allows students to begin their Penn State education at any Penn State Commonwealth Campus and then complete their degree at the University Park campus, or another PSU campus.
