Welcome to Penn State Scranton.
We are honored your student chose our campus for their college experience. As they start this new phase of their lives, it is our goal to provide them with the foundation they will need to embark on successful careers and enjoy the benefits of a college degree – which include increased earning potential and greater marketability in the job market.
As the family member of a Penn State Scranton student, you are a vital part of our campus' extended family, and I want you to know that our faculty and staff will work hard to ensure that the investment you and your student are making will have a positive impact on their future.
We genuinely care about our students and are willing to make that extra effort to help them succeed. We have a number of support programs available to them free of charge to assist them when needed -- from peer tutoring to counseling/psychological services to career services to health and wellness programs. And, for those students who fall on hard times, we have an Emergency Student Hardship Fund, as well as a food pantry on campus.
Our academic programs provide a blend of theoretical, practical and engaging learning experiences that help prepare students for the real world. These experiences occur both in and out of the classroom through virtual learning, participation in research or mentoring/internship experiences, and involvement in University programs and locally-based community and service learning opportunities.
The diversity students find here at Penn State Scranton also expands their perspectives and world views, which is critical in today's global community. Here, they get to know and interact with a broad mix of students and faculty who come from more than 30 countries and different parts of the U.S.
We also host guest speakers in the classroom, often successful alumni in that particular field, and offer fun and cultural events to enrich the overall learning experiences of our students and community. Many of these are open to the public, so I hope that you will be able to join your student and make use of these exciting programs as well.
Your student can also take advantage of extracurricular activities on campus that complement and enrich their learning experience. Students can choose from fun, as well as experiential, opportunities – from varsity, intramural and club sports; to student government, professional clubs and community service organizations; to diversity-based clubs and niche interest groups. With over 20 student clubs and organizations, there is sure to be something for everyone.
I recommend that you encourage your student to take full advantage of these opportunities to help them expand their social circle and involvement on campus, while learning the importance of networking and being part of something bigger.
Should you have any questions or concerns, I am always available to meet and speak with you. I can be reached by phone at 570-963-2539, or call Mrs. Marianne Gable, my administrative assistant, to schedule an appointment.
For the Glory,
Chancellor Marwan Wafa
