Medical Terminology Course Description

Medical Terminology introduces students to the language of health care through a systematic study of medical word building. The course focuses on the use of prefixes, root words, and suffixes to help students develop the extensive vocabulary required in today’s health care professions. Emphasis is placed on correct pronunciation, spelling, and practical usage of medical terms commonly encountered in clinical and administrative settings.

Students gain a foundational understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology as they relate to medical terminology. No prior knowledge of health sciences is required.

By the end of this 12 hr. course (6 contact hrs.), students will be able to:

  • Analyze and construct medical terms using prefixes, root words, and suffixes
  • Pronounce and spell medical terms accurately
  • Interpret medical terminology related to major body systems
  • Apply medical vocabulary in health care–related communication
  • Recognize basic concepts of anatomy, physiology, and disease processes
